How the Governing Body works:
Working with the Headteacher, the Governing Body:
- set the aims and objectives for the school;
- set the policies for achieving those aims and objectives;
- set the targets for achieving those aims and objectives;
- monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making towards achievement of its aims and objectives;
- are a source of challenge and support to the headteacher (a critical friend);
- meet once every term to discuss their monitoring of the school.
Governors don’t need to be experts on education but they do need to be committed to making all discussion, scrutiny and decision making focussed on the best interests of children, and be relentless in their determination to make the school vision a reality for all pupils. They do need to be able to get on with people and to be able to work as part of a team, but also be able ask the difficult questions when it’s necessary – and sometimes the easy questions too, like ‘why do we do it like that?’
Governors, as volunteers, also need to be able to make time to come into school occasionally during the school day for purposeful visits, and to attend and contribute to evening meetings regularly – at least two meetings a term usually. It is also an expectation governors will undertake relevant training, which may be on line or face to face, and keep abreast of educational developments as they effect the school.
Governing Body Committees
In addition to termly meetings of the Full Governing Body, the governors over see specific aspects of our school through two committees: the Teaching and Learning Committee which meets every half term; and the Resources Committee which meets every term. The discussions and decisions made by these committees are considered at the Full Governing Body meeting at the end of each term so that all governors are fully informed of all aspects of school life.
